Another easy day to get from Beaufort to Charleston, SC. The big flies have arrived due to the usual marshy areas surrounding the ICW. Cassie gets so excited when a fly comes in the boat...especially when the fly swatter appears.....she snaps her jaw trying to catch them first.
Here's a scene from the ICW between Beaufort and Charleston - long docks are key due to the big tides and marsh.
Overall, we are really impressed with South Carolina and we loved Charleston. We "parked" the boat at the MegaDock Charleston City Marina on June 9th; stayed there for the night; and then stayed two evenings off the boat in the historic part of Charleston. The Marina was enormous....when I say it was more than a 1/4 mile walk to get to land from our slip, I'm not kidding. And, they are expanding it out into the channel soon. Next time, I'm bringing roller skates! Here's the view from our boat slip with some little, future sailors being towed out for a sail.
Bob and I both thought Charleston had a great combination of what's important in a city - great public space, interesting/diverse neighborhoods, a college to add youth/funkiness, culture, super food, etc etc. Now, here are some pics so you can see for yourself...
A bit of fun/funky - Free Air for bikes in the college area and a little Fire Station Humor that Cassie didn't quite understand.
In addition to the damage done to Charleston during the revolutionary and civil wars, the earthquake of 1886 definitely took a toll. Many of the buidlings (if still standing) had a tilt to them so an ingenious solution was used....driving metal pins through the structure and screwing it back into alignment. You can see these pins/screws on many of the buildings in the beautiful french quarter. (PS - I'm already looking at the realestate websites.)Next stop is Georgetown, SC....probably our last stop in SC.
No no, not leaving Sunset Key. It is beautiful. I guess I need to put this one on my bucket list too. Wow, it's getting long!!!!!!!!!! Love Cassie with the dog at the firehouse. If it moved she would have jumped a mile. Raining here this am. Actually cool and rainy since Saturday. Stay safe. Look forward to your posting. Love. Diane
